Suan Lum Night Bazaar, the once-popular open air market opposite Lumpini Park, will be reborn tomorrow at a new location -- near the Ratchada-Lat Phrao intersection.

Called Suan Lum Night Bazaar Ratchadaphisek, the new shopping mall and open air market will be operated by Night Bazaar Co, set up with 850 million baht in registered capital.

The venture has three partners: Pairojana Toongtong, a former politician, Charn Tulyaphisitchai, the owner of Racha Hotel on Ratchadaphisek Road, and Sertsiri Morarueng, a lawyer.

The company earmarked 3.6 billion baht to develop the entire project. Of the total, 1.6 billion baht went to develop Suan Lum Night Bazaar and parking space and the remaining 2 billion baht has been used to build The Bazaar Hotel, a four-star hotel with 800 rooms. It will create about 1,000 new jobs.

"We want Suan Lum Night Bazaar Ratchadaphisek to become one of the landmarks that foreign tourists should visit in Bangkok," said Mr Pairojana, chief operating officer of Night Bazaar Co.

The first Suan Lum Night Bazaar operated near the Wireless-Rama IV Road intersection opposite Lumpini Park from 2001 to 2011. It was a famous flea market along with Chatuchak weekend market.

Suan Lum Night Bazaar was shut down after its lease contract with the Crown Property Bureau expired. The bureau last year awarded the rights to develop a 90-rai prime plot on Rama IV Road, including the land that used to house the night bazaar, to Univentures and TCC Assets (Thailand) to develop a multibillion-baht mixed-use complex.

After the bazaar's closure, the following year Mr Pairojana rented a 19-rai plot on Ratchadaphisek Road from the State Railway of Thailand and other landlords to develop the new shopping project.

Most of the old vendors will move to the new night bazaar, which is scheduled to have a soft opening tomorrow with the grand opening scheduled for February.

Mr Pairojana said Suan Lum Night Bazaar Ratchadaphisek has 125,000 square metres of total space. It comprises a shopping plaza and a walking street with 1,800 shops for Otop products, art and handmade items, fashion, ornaments and food.

It will also have magic and cabaret shows, a fitness centre, a boxing gym and a water park.

The night bazaar zone will open from 4pm until midnight.

The company will allocate 30 million baht to promote the night bazaar. It expects to generate 450 million baht from rental fees each year and break even within the next six years.
